things are finally settling down...after a wild night in berkeley. in the last 15 minutes the all clear has been given on the uc berkeley campus.thanks for joining us at eleven..i'm steve aveson. and i'm pam moore...fiery protests erupted on the campus of u-c berkeley in opposition to a planned speech by a conservative writer and activist.milo yiannopoulous was set to speak tonight...until the university pulled the plug, after

protests turned violent.kron 4's alecia reid has been on the scene all night..she's live with the latest, alecia? . people that came out to protest say tonight's guest creates a climate of hate.and that puts communities that are already volnurable . at risk. pkgthe protest at u-c berkeley quickly turned violent tonight. two hours before guest speaker milo yiannopoulos was set to speak, a small group ripped down barricades, started a fire and shot fireworks directly at officers.sot - i think its negative and it's dangerous. when you're going against people you call fascist, yet your actions are fascist, it's negative and it's not the way forward. the majority of people that turned up tonight

were peaceful. they tell me they were protest a man, who they believe represents racism, transphobia, and misogyny among other forms of hate.sot - it is my responsibility as a student to come out and protestsot - he's hateful. that type of speech shouldn't be protected.the school ended up canceling the event 2 hours before start time because of the chaos on campus. u-c berkeley says amid that violence, destruction of property, and conceern for public safetty it was necessary to remove milo from the campus and canel his speaking engagement. the school condemns the violence that was on display tonight, and says it overshadows the efforts to engage in lawful protest against the performer. although some students disagree with the way things went down, they believe their

point got across.sot - i think it speaks volumes. people have made their opinions known standupthere were dozens of additional police officers on duty, but the police department says it was just impossible to maintain order given the level of threat and violence that we saw here tonight.so it was best to cancel the event.reporting live from u-c berkeley. he's a 32 year old...born in greece, raised in england. he's now the news editor of brietbart news...the alt right website that was co-founded by another polarizing person...president trump's senior advisor steve bannon. yiannapolis is a self- described internet troll...who's comments have been criticized as racist, misogynist, anti-muslim and white supremacist. he was banned from twitter...for life last year for what the company called "inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others".

once he was taken off campus yiannapolis posted on facebook, saying in part that he's safe... and the left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down. and then u-c berkeley strongly condemeded the violence... and went on to say... while yiannopoulos' views, tactics and rhetoric are profoundly contrary to our own, we are bound by the constitution, the law, our values and the campus's principles of community to enable free expression. i'm gl, k4n. . . a big mess to cleanup tomorrow in berkeley..protesters smashed windows on campus, and several businesses in the area. kron 4's jr stone continues our coverage... he's live in berkeley with a look at the
